Inside the Zone of Roadside Picnic


    While Roadside Picnic's story and characters are extremely interesting, with the main character, Red, having significant character development as the book takes place over many years by skipping large groups of time.
     Before the events of Roadside Picnic some sort of alien visitors arrive and create a large area filled with extreme dangers like slime that destroys anything it touches and an area completed destroyed by some sort of plague. However along with those dangers there are valuable artifacts like batteries that never run out and disks that can't be separated. These treasures cause scavengers called Stalkers to sneak past the guards and brave the dangers in hopes of getting fabulously rich; Red is one of these Stalkers. 
    What makes this setting so interesting to me is how limitless the possibilities it is. The book makes it extremely clear how only the well known parts are explored and that the closer to the center you get the greater the rewards. 
    I would definitely recommend giving the book a try as Red is an extremely likable character, for me at least, as even though he has many flaws he feels human and is a good character explore an even better world.

    I find this book interesting, especially because it highlights the fact that more reward comes with more danger. The decisions that Red and other characters make will be conflicted because it seems hard to decide whether it is worth risking their lives for these seemingly invaluable items, although I predict that they will since these items will benefit the entire human race greatly. I'm curious about the specifics, such as the reasons that the aliens decided to create this trap for humans to explore.

3 Spooky Short Stories

  Instead of doing a standard blog I decided to use one of the prompts and redesigned the cover for a book, but instead of doing my blog on a normal book I read a couple short stories by the same author. The 3 short stories I read were Landlady, Lamb to the Slaughter, and Way up to Heaven which were all written by Roald Dahl. They are all relatively short, about 8 or so pages. While I did say they were scary stories they aren’t really; they are all relatively normal stories but all have some weird or creepy twist at the end. Because of this it's going to be a struggle to explain the cover without giving away spoilers. I recommend just reading the stories as it takes about an hour and if you only have 15 minutes just read Lamb to the Slaughter as it's definitely my favorite of the bunch.  The reason I chose the dark building as the background is because every single one of the stories takes place in unnamed cities.
